Tailored, not Tight
The 2010’s saw wearing your clothes too tightly as what was fashionable. Its almost the antithesis of the baggy, loose clothing trend of the 90’s. While we’ve been slowly progressing away from the tight fad in the latter years of the decade, there’s enough evidence to suggest that in 2020 there are still many men who believe that tight clothing is correct clothing.
Necktie Knots
There are dozens of ways to tie a necktie. In fact, authors Thomas Fink and Yong Mao published a book titled The 85 Ways to Tie a Tie in 1999. No doubt even more have been invented since then. Tie knots all vary in size, shape, symmetry, and difficulty in creation. But while there may be a myriad of methods to flip some fabric, there are truly only several a man needs to know.
Common Style Mistakes and Misconceptions
The world of menswear can be a confusing one. There seems to be a lot of rules and regulations on something as simple as wearing clothes. Truthfully, some of these rules are obsolete while others are still considered solid guidance. Where do these rules come from and why do they apply? Who’s got the time to look up what’s appropriate every time you need to head out the door?
Shoe Care
Shoes, like the rest of your wardrobe, should be an investment- something that you put money into that will still pay dividends for years to come. No matter how much you choose to spend on shoes its important to remember that taking care of them will save you money in the long run. A single pair of shoes can last 10 to 20 years even when worn regularly, depending on the quality of materials and your level of care for them. This will save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars over time as opposed to just replacing the shoes every time they get beat up.
Gangster Gravitas
It’s the 20’s again folks.
From flappers with feathers to suffrage and progress, prohibition and protests to bootlegging and speakeasy’s… The 1920’s, glamorized in countless media, is a decade that has rightfully earned its space in the culture of the American mind. Part of that space belongs to none other than the early 20th century gangster.
Shoe Basics
It may surprise you to know that there are just as many types of shoes and boots out there for men as there are for women. Take a breath with me as I name just a few. Aaaand oxfords, derbies, loafers, monk straps, bluchers, wingtips, spectators, full brogues, semi brogues, quarter brogues, longwing, patent leather, whole cut, opera pumps, jodhpurs, chelsea, chukka, boat, kilties, and the list could go on still. Everything I just named above is either a category of footwear or a specific detailing that can help differentiate a piece of footwear.
The Odd Jacket
Simply put, an odd jacket is any jacket that is paired with unmatched trousers. This is typically done by using different colors, however, it can also be done with a combination of colors, patterns, or fabrics. Most people would be familiar with odd jackets as blazers or sport coats. These terms are more specific types of odd jackets which I will cover in a later post.
